Smoker Pellets FAQ: Your Questions Answered
Got a question about our smoker pellets? You will likely find the answer below.
We have grouped our most common questions into four sections.
They cover what pellets are, how to use them, which flavour to pick, and how shipping works.
About Our Smoker Pellets
Our smoker pellets are made from all-natural hardwood, compressed into small cylinders. There are no fillers, oils or binders added — just real wood.
“Pellets” is the general term for compressed hardwood fuel. “Pellet smoker pellets” simply describes pellets made specifically for pellet smokers, rather than wood chips or lump charcoal. Both describe the same style of product on this site.
Wood chips are loose pieces of wood, often soaked before use. Smoker pellets are compressed and far more consistent, so they burn evenly and feed automatically through a pellet grill’s hopper.
No. Our pellets are 100% natural hardwood, with a compressed cell structure that holds them together. There are no added chemicals, oils or artificial binders.
Opened pellets stay good for several months if kept sealed, cool and dry. Moisture is the main thing to avoid, since damp pellets swell and burn poorly.
Keep the bag sealed and store your pellets somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight and rain. A sealed container works well for opened bags.
Pellets do not spoil the way food does, but they do absorb moisture from the air. Damp pellets can swell, clog the auger and burn unevenly, so dry storage matters.
Using Pellets In Your Grill
A pellet grill feeds hardwood pellets from a hopper into a fire pot. There, they burn to produce heat and real wood smoke. This gives you the flavour of a wood fire with the convenience of set-and-forget temperature control.
Yes. Our smoker pellets suit any pellet grill or pellet smoker that runs on standard hardwood pellets, not only Traeger models.
Some gas and charcoal grills can use pellets in a smoker box or foil pouch for extra smoke flavour. That said, pellets are designed to work best in a dedicated pellet grill’s auger and fire pot system.
A long, low-and-slow cook such as brisket can use one to two bags of pellets over 10 to 14 hours. The exact amount depends on your grill’s efficiency and the weather.
Yes. Mixing flavours, like a mild wood with a bolder one, is a great way to build a custom smoke profile. Our Signature Blend Pellets already do this for you, combining hickory, maple and cherry.
Pellets are specifically chosen hardwoods, so they tend to give a more distinct, consistent wood flavour than charcoal. Charcoal is generally chosen for heat rather than flavour.
Choosing The Right Pellet Flavour
Hickory Pellets are a classic choice for brisket, thanks to their full-bodied, bold flavour. Mesquite Pellets or Oak & Whiskey Blend Pellets are strong alternatives if you want something even bolder.
Apple Pellets and Cherry Pellets both suit chicken well, adding a light, fruity smoke that will not overpower the meat.
Pecan Pellets and Hickory Pellets are both popular with pork ribs, giving a sweet-to-bold range depending on your taste.
Fish suits a lighter touch. Apple or Cherry Pellets give a subtle smoke, while Mesquite Pellets suit a bolder, more adventurous result.
Apple Pellets and Cherry Pellets are our mildest options. Both offer a light, slightly fruity smoke that suits delicate foods like fish, chicken and vegetables.
Mesquite Pellets and Hickory Pellets are our boldest options. Both deliver a hearty, full-bodied smoke that stands up well to rich cuts of beef and pork.
